William Edwin Steffen

William (Bill) Edwin Steffen, 89, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at his residence. 

Bill was born on May 7, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois to Edwin and Anna (Hanna) Steffen. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago and furthered his education becoming a lawyer and earning his law degree at the Northwestern University Law School.

Bill retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, and he then worked many years as an attorney for the State of Indiana in the Child Support division. He was a member of a poker club for 40 plus years where he loved spending time with his buddies. He was a member of St. Alban's Baseball League where he also umpired and loved working with kids. 

William is survived by his step children, Jeanne (husband, Charles) Thompson, Cheryl (husband, Jeff) Poe, John (wife, Angie) Grimmig, and children, David Steffen, Carolyn (husband, Steve) Benages and Michael (wife, Angie) Steffen; four grandchildren, Matthew Poe, Katherine Poe, Emily Benages and Stephen Benages 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mariann (Wilson) Steffen; his parents; and his aunt, Mary Lilrose.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. William's ashes will be interred at the Episcopal Church he had attended when he lived in Chicago.
