William G. (Bill) Mehling, 95, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at Greenfield Healthcare Center in Greenfield, following an extended illness. Bill was born on October 1, 1924 in Alexandria, to George Dewey Mehling Sr. and May Philomena (Stephens) Mehling, the fourth of 11 children. He graduated from St Mary School in Alexandria and Alexandria High School. He later attended Indiana University. He lived in Alexandria most of his life. Bill served in the US Army in the Second World War in the Combat Engineers from April 15, 1943 to January 4, 1946. After serving in the Army he was an employee and owner of Ed’s Tavern in Alexandria for many years. He was self-employed as a Public Accountant in Alexandria from 1958 until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of St Mary Church, American Legion, F.O.E. 1771, B.P.O.E. 478 and the Groundhog Society in Alexandria. A highlight of his later life was the Honor Flight to D.C., in 2013, with his son Tom and his brother George. He is survived by his son, Tom Mehling; daughters Susie Mehling, Jo (Gary) Greer and Ginger (Gary) Fisher; step-daughter, JoAnne (Dave) Johnston; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Quarles, Sister Patricia Anne Mehling, Charlene Fisher and Mary Lou Hunter. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 33 years, Virginia (Cook) Mehling in 1985; his wife of 21 years, Monica (Fox Norris) Mehling in 2012; a daughter, Christy Alaine; brothers, Charles, George, Maurice and Michael Mehling; sisters, Patricia Hinton and Margaret Ireland; The family would like to extend special thanks to Bill’s care providers at Heritage Hospice, Greenfield Healthcare Center, and Roudebush VA Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, at the Church of St. Mary, 820 W. Madison St., Alexandria with Father Dave Hellmann officiating. Burial will follow at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria with military honors. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Brown Butz Diedring Funeral Home, 515 E 53rd Street, Anderson. A Rosary service will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home to close the visitation hour. Memorial contributions are suggested to the building fund of the Church of St. Mary at Alexandria through the funeral home. Bill often said “we are here to take care of each other”. In keeping with his belief, all attending are asked to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines.
