Virgil Lee Wheeler, 86, of Anderson, Indiana passed away Monday May 7, after a brief illness. Virgil was a veteran of the Korean War, where he fought in the battle of Pork Chop Hill as well as other notable battles. He was born and raised in Bald Knob, Arkansas, the eldest son of Leander and Lettie Jane Wheeler. He later moved to Anderson, where he began work at Delco Remy Corporation. He continued his career there until he retired after over 30 years of service. Virgil was a very business minded man with an exceptional work ethic. Never one to slow down with age, Virgil was discovered at least once on his roof cleaning out the gutters after the age of 80. When not on the roof, he could be found with a glass of buttermilk and cornbread or crackers. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman and an active member of the Eagles Lodge Marion #227. Virgil was also a boy scout leader for many years when his son, Steve was younger. Virgil was very involved in his neighborhood; offering his help to whomever may need it. He truly enjoyed helping his neighbors with any and all of their landscaping needs. In return, his neighbors did not hesitate to offer genuine concern and love to him. The family cannot express how much that means to us. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Elsie Mary (Owen) Wheeler; sons, Steven Wayne Wheeler and William Ray Wheeler; sisters, Leanna May, Pauline, Maxine and Lucille; and brother, Earl. Virgil is survived by his daughter, Vicki Lowe; grandson, Jeff (Jessica) Wheeler; granddaughter, Elise Wheeler; great grandsons, Riley and Nathaniel Wheeler; and brother, Wayne Wheeler. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 11, at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory. Burial will be at East Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
