Virgil E. Boles, 95, of Anderson, passed away June 13, 2016 at his residence after a sudden illness.
He was born November 23, 1920, in Blountsville, IN, the son of the late George Dewey and Gladys Marie (Paul) Boles.
He served his country in the Army Air Corp during World War II, surviving Pearl Harbor and serving until 1945. Virgil retired from Big Four Railroad after an extensive career as an engineer.
Virgil was a very humble, yet accomplished man. He became a pilot while in the service and owned his own plane. He also had a love of the ocean, enjoying time both above the waves, sailing, and below, snorkeling. He also had a very keen sense of humor, which he maintained right to the end. He was a lively, witty, hero of a father and grandfather, and a true inspiration to his entire family.
He is survived by his daughter, Janice (Greg) Kumkowski of Anderson; grandchildren, Andrea Ebbert, John (Dana Short) Ebbert, Courtney (Kyle) Burke and Kayla (Dan Motsinger) Kumkowski, all of Anderson; great-grandchild, Ezra Willis of Anderson; step-son, Phillip (Denise) Sullivan of Anderson; and step-grandchildren, Phil Sullivan, Rodney Sullivan and Nancy Bowyer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Glapha Gladys “Gigi” Boles and grandchild, Sandra Lynne Ebbert.
Cremation will take place and there will be a Life Celebration memorial service at home at a later date.
