Maxine Noel, age 96 of Pendleton, passed away peacefully at Bethany Pointe nursing home on Friday, July 8, 2016. She was born to Walter and Mary Ann “Mamie” Johnson on December 4, 1919, in Charleston, WV. Maxine grew up in the Campbell’s Creek, WV area and graduated from Malden High School. After school she worked in the Charleston office of the state Adjutant General, commander of the WV National Guard. During that time she met and married her beloved Sherman C. Noel and moved to Pendleton, Indiana where they built their home on State Road 67.
Maxine became a sixty-year resident of the Pendleton community where she and Sherman raised their family. She was a long time active member of the Pendleton Christian Church, a member and president of The Saturday Club, and a volunteer at the Pendleton Museum. Maxine loved flowers and tended a large garden at the family home. She was fiercely independent, and remained in her own “home place” through her 95th year. Maxine was a big fan of the Colts’ Peyton Manning and the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter.
Maxine will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her three brothers and three sisters. She is survived by son Douglas Dickson (Margaret Leahy), of Columbus, Ohio, son David Noel (Sandy Jones) of Noblesville, son Daniel Noel (Diane Matlack) of Elkins, WV, son Joseph Noel (Tammy Bowman) of Pendleton, and daughter Amy Laird (Robert Laird) of Colorado Springs, CO. She leaves also thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for Maxine during her last years, especially Sherry Robertson of Pendleton.
Family will receive friends Wednesday July 13, from 11:00 to 1:00 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, 211 E State St, Pendleton. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 with burial at Anderson Memorial Park, 6805 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Anderson, IN.
