Rod Wood

Rod Wood, 91, of Anderson, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born on May 9, 1925 in Taylor County, KY to the late Walter and Nina (White) Wood and lived most of his life in Anderson.

His career began as a teacher at Orestes Elementary, Edgewood Elementary and Westvale Elementary then becoming a principal at Meadowbrook, Westvale, Franklin and Edgewood Elementary, retiring in 1986 after 34 years of service. He also, served in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sgt during WWII.

Rod was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and former member of Edgewood Country Club, V.F.W. and past board member of the Family Network Agency. He helped organize the Little League in Anderson and volunteered in the Victoria Guild Gift Shop in the hospital and the prison ministry through St. Mary’s Church. He was a former teacher, mentor and coach who was widely respected.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Wood of Anderson; daughter, Marci (Husband, John) Dunham of Zionsville; son, Dennis (wife, Carolyn) Wood of Carmel; five grandchildren, John Dunham, Aaron Wood, Jennifer Dunham Veale, Ryan Wood and Rachel Wood; six great grandchildren; sisters, Ila Doverspike of Apollo, PA. and Charlotte (husband, Frank) Hogan of Belleview, FL; brother, Boyce Wood of Anderson; sisters in law, Evelyn Wood and Joan (husband, Bob) Burton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Wood; grandson, Jacob Wood; and three brothers, Travis Wood, Hal Wood and Pete Wood.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Fr. Jeff Martin officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 266 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m.
