Roberta Maxine Barker

Roberta Maxine "Berta" Barker, 82, Lapel, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Community Hospital of Anderson following a brief illness. She was born on November 13, 1931, in Anderson, Indiana to Jona and Laura (Sparks) Scott. She graduated from Markleville High School in 1950. Roberta provided child care in her home for many children for over 30 years. She was a member of the East Lynn Christian Church in Anderson and had been active in bowling. She served as secretary/treasurer of the Thursday 50 Plus League and the Monday Senior League at Coopers Sport Bowl in Anderson. When her boys were young, she served as secretary/treasurer of the Lapel Baseball League. Her favorite job though was being a grandmother. She is survived by three sons, Kip (wife, Ann) Barker of Fort Wayne, Phil (wife, Colleen) Barker of Middletown, and Richard Barker of Lapel; four grandchildren, Holly (husband, Jason) Cannaday of Anderson; Andrew (wife, Leslie) Barker of Pendleton, Emily and Lilly Barker both of Fort Wayne; three great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Kyle, and Kimberly Cannaday; and one sister, Martha Hundley of Middletown. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, William Louis "Bill" Barker; and two brothers, Julius Keith and Jona Lorane Scott. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Rev. Susan Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, January 10, 2014, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. Memorial contributions may be made to East Lynn Christian Church, 522 East 53rd Street, Anderson, Indiana 46013.
