Robert K. Steiner

Robert K. Steiner, aka "Butterfly Bob" passed away on April 3, 2013 at the age 75 in St. Petersburg, Florida following a brief illness. Born June 20, 1937 in Kokomo, Indiana, he was the son of William and Mildred Steiner and brother to Bill and Ann. Bob had been married to Connie Sue Wright, mother to his six children, Ronald Jay, Mark Allan, Laura Denise (Ebel), Susan Lyn (Martel), Tracey Lee (Sarris) and Robert Christopher. He was beloved grandfather to Kerstin, Nicholas, Alex and Marcus Steiner, Madison and Jenna Ebel, Sarah Martel, Grace, Samuel and Alia Sarris and Ian Steiner. For the last 20 years he was partner to Rhonda Hopkins and father figure to her children Joshua and Layne. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he had an exciting and varied career life including as a union man, talent booking agent (clients included the Stan Kenton Orchestra, the Don Ellis Orchestra and drummer Buddy Rich), and antique dealer in rare collectables with a specialty in glassware. It was his work as a craftsman building self-designed furniture that dominated much of his later years. In addition to selling his hand-crafted solid-wood creations to the public he often gifted them to family members and those in need. In addition, Bob had a great interest in fostering habitat for butterflies turning his and Rhonda's backyard into a butterfly garden and haven where he passed many an hour enthralled by their beauty. A short service will be held graveside at Brookside Cemetery, Lapel, Indiana on Thursday, April 11 at 2 pm. A private celebration of life will be held in Louisville, Kentucky for family and close friends on Saturday, April 13th at 2 pm.
