Our Father, Robert Floyd Hoover will be laid to rest on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Indiana. He was 95 years old when he passed away on May 17, 2018. Bob was born on November 17, 1922 in Elbing, Kansas, the son of Orville Edmund Hoover and Leota (Cable). Our Dad loved his God, his family, and his Union. Bob left Kansas at the age of 6 and came to Anderson. He excelled in the Vocational program at Main Street High School, than graduated in 1941 from Anderson High School. He was awarded entrance into the Apprenticeship program at Delco Remy, Plant 1 in 1941. Bob married his high school sweetheart in 1942. He served his country in WWII in the US Navy, joining in 1943, stationed in Saipan until his honorable discharge in 1946. He received the Indiana Senate Certification of Recognition for his years of military service. Bob was a man of principals. He was a champion of Civil Rights, Women’s Rights and Human Rights. He received many acknowledgements in his lifetime. He received Indiana’s highest honor in 1995, the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award presented by Governor Evan Bayh. He was given the Walter P. Ruther Distinguished Service Award. He served on the Anderson School Board for 4 years in the 70’s. He was on the Advisory Board of Richland Township for 4 years. He was treasurer and President of East Central United Senior Action. He was the Apprentice Chairman for 14 years, mentoring all Skilled Trade hopefuls. Bob spent 26 years as President of the North Anderson Senior Center. He was UAW Committeeman and Zone Committeeman for 14 years during his 42 tears at Delco Remy. He was chosen for the Older Hoosier of the Year Award from the Madison County Council on Aging. He was awarded the Community Service Award from AFL-CIO in 1986. United Senior Action awarded Bob with the Sam Mesarachia Leadership Award in 1999. He volunteered over 25,000 hours and was acknowledged by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in 2009. He volunteered throughout his life in Life Stream, RSVP and Senior programs. For all of these awards and the many more our dad received, none could ever compare to most prestigious award of all and that would be the Lifetime Achievement Award for Best Father of a Lifetime. A spiritual man, he gave his life to Christ for the second time in a service at the Crossroads United Methodist Church, with Pastor John Hackney presiding. Surviving are his children, Michael (Terri) Hoover and Donna Marie (Corkie) Curtis; 4 grandchildren, Diana Maupin, Brian Hoover, April Pruitt, AJ Curtis; 7 great grandchildren; 4 great- great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandsons on the way. Also surviving, his special companion of 10 years, Irene Priest, many special friends from Oak Street Senior Center and loved neighbors of 42 years, Dick and Shelia True. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings, Esther (Davisson), Kenneth, Wilbur (Olive), Ethel (Kauffman), Edith (Hedges) and the youngest, Clarence. His beloved wife of nearly 63 years, Ferol Marie O’heron, passed away in 2005. A special acknowledgement to the dedicated Nursing and Tech staff at St. Vincent’s hospital, 6th floor. Deep regards to Tamie, Theresa, Sara, Michelle, Amy, Melissa and all the dedicated staff. Thank you! Services will be at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson, Indiana 46013. Visitation is from 9:00 – 11:00 am prior to the service at 11:30 am on Tuesday with Pastor John Hackney officiating. Burial will be at East Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Senior Action of Indiana. You may post online condolences at www.brownbutzdiedring.com.
