Robert (Bob) Childs Morris, 96, passed away on September 1, 2018 in his sleep. He was born September 30, 1921 in Anderson, IN. A third generation Andersonian, he was preceded in death by his father Robert Chauncey Morris, Mother Lena M. Morris and wife of 35 years Velma J. (Vogley) Morris. He leaves four children and their spouses: Sandra Lee and Tom O’Neal; Robert Christian and Linda Morris; Martin William and Pam Morris; and Megan Ann and Tom Fowler. He also leaves four grandchildren and spouses: Brandon Reber and fiancée Kim Hindsley; Alfred Morris; Robert Courtney and Ashleigh Morris; and Lindsay and Zach Wachs, along with two great-grandchildren Jackson and William Wachs. Bob was a retired die maker from Delco Remy (34 years) as well as having worked 12 years at Nicholson File. Bob was a 1939 Anderson High School graduate who attended Wabash College where he played football and baseball. His junior year at Wabash (1941) the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and he subsequently quit college and joined the Navy to become a pilot. Upon earning his wings at Pensacola Naval Air Station he transferred into the Marine Corps as a pilot. He spent 4 ½ years in the U.S. Marines as a PBJ (B-25) combat bomber pilot with Marine squadron VMB 423. He flew 39 strikes in the Pacific earning the rank of Captain and receiving the Marine Air Medal. Bob Belonged to Anderson’s American Legion Post #127, VFW Post #266, the Elks Lodge #209, and at Wabash he was inducted into Phi Delta Theta fraternity. During his life in Anderson he enjoyed baseball (both playing and watching), dancing to big band music with his wife Velma and hunting and fishing when possible. Bob loved Anderson and its people always remarking on how “thankful” he was to have lived in Anderson and to “have had so many good friends over the years”. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Rev. Mike Weber officiating. Entombment will follow at East Maplewood Cemetery.
