Richard L. Whetsel

Richard L. "Moe" Whetsel, 73, Pendleton, passed away Friday, October 30, 2015, at his home following brief illness. He was born on September 19, 1942, in Anderson, Indiana to R. Mark and Ruth (Garrett) Whetsel. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1960 and was a U. S. Army veteran. Richard retired in 1997 from the Madison County Sheriff's department after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Lapel American Legion Post 212 and enjoyed fishing and farming. He is survived by his son, Rusty (wife, Alecia) Whetsel of Lapel; three grandchildren, Trey Orbik of Tampa, FL, Corrie Blackford of Anderson, and Bailey Blackford of Lapel; and two great-grandchildren, Carson Blackford of Lapel and Olivia Russell of Lapel; three sisters, Joan Ballard of Bradenton, FL, Carolyn (husband, Phillip) Rapp of Pendleton, Martha Wallace of Fortville; a brother, Charles K. (wife, Phyllis) Whetsel of Ingalls; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Neal Whetsel; and a sister, Jean LeGault. A military service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, November 2, 2015, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with the Lapel American Legion Post 212 officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where military graveside rites will be performed. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, November 1, 2015, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Madison County Humane Society, 2219 Crystal Street, Anderson, Indiana 46012.
