Paul VanDorn, 79, of Anderson, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, after a brief illness. Paul was born on September 28, 1943, in Kokomo, Indiana, the third son of educators Edson and Nina (Kerr) VanDorn. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carl and Joe.
An accomplished swimmer, Paul swam for Kokomo High School and then, on scholarship, for Indiana University at Bloomington. After three years in undergraduate school, Paul was accepted into the I.U. School of Dentistry, thus fulfilling a childhood dream. He received his DDS in 1968 and earned his MSD (specialty degree) in 1970.
Thereafter, Paul practiced periodontics in Anderson for over forty years. He thoroughly enjoyed his profession and considered it a privilege to serve his patients' dental needs. Many long-term patients became like family. Throughout his career, Paul was a member of the American, Midwest and Indiana Academies of Periodontics, as well as the American, Indiana and East Central dental societies.
Art and music were among his passions, as was travel. He felt fortunate to have visited much of the United States and five continents. After retirement, he and his wife spent winters in warm and sunny climates. Paul also loved fishing and I.U. basketball, holding season tickets for over fifty years.
Above all, Paul cherished family and family gatherings. He was an especially loving and loyal husband and father. With the help of family, incredible friends and hospice, Paul spent the last months of his illness at home. Armed with his Christian faith, he inspired all with his courage, wit and selflessness.
Paul will be profoundly missed by his surviving wife of 55 years, Patricia; his son, Matthew VanDorn of Kokomo; his daughter, Kathryn Smith and his granddaughter, Ember Smith, both of Louisiana.
Private services were held. Cremation followed. Paul will be interred at Maplewood Cemetery.
