Norman Conrad West, 99, of Anderson, passed away on December 31, 2023, at Community Hospital. Norman was born on July 7, 1924, in Huntington, IN to the late Von and Mae (Underwood) West.
Norman graduated from Marion High School in 1942 and then served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Signalman Second Class. He was stationed in the American Theater – Asiatic Pacific on the island of Ulithi and was also awarded the Victory Medal. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen (Katie) Hennigin, while stationed at NABPD in San Francisco prior to going to Ulithi. After the war, he earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Upon graduation he accepted a position as an Engineer for the Indiana State Highway Department and was eventually appointed the Project Engineer for the I-69 and I-70 projects. He retired from the highway department in 1992 after 42 years.
Norman was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, and in his free time he loved boating, camping, listening to music and dancing. Most of all, he loved his family and participating in family activities.
He is survived by his children: David West (Nora), Susan West Bivens (Robert), Rick West (Jan), Terry West (Joann), and James Michael West; stepdaughters, Marlene Smith and Margie Cline; grandchildren, Denise DeHart, Brian West, Matthew West, Bethany Doss, Michael West, Kathleen West, Sarah Heuler, Travis West and Kelson West, and 12 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; Kathleen Elizabeth (Katie) West; second wife, Carolyn West; brothers, Wallace and Victor West, and stepdaughter, Marsha Jarvis.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 5, 2024, at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson, IN, 46013.
A mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 2801 Lincoln St, Anderson, IN 46016. Father Tom Metzger will be officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park.
Memorial Contributions may be made to The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, LA at nationalww2museum.org.
