Nettie E. Bean, 84, Anderson, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Community Hospital of Anderson following a brief illness.
She was born on August 17, 1924, in Estill County, Kentucky to William and Mollie (Jamison) Lamb.
She graduated from Union Township High School in 1942 and received a nursing degree from Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Kokomo in 1945. Mrs. Bean was instrumental in developing the nursing standards for infant incubators as well as the standardization of the surgical tech program that are still in use today. She was known as the nurse that would not quit and had been featured in Look and Life magazines.
Nettie retired in 1992 from Mercy Hospital in Elwood after 27 years of employment.
She was a member of the Anderson Presbyterian Church
She is survived by two daughters, Kyle (husband, James) Hill of Summitville, and Kristen (husband, Dr. Albert) Happel of Anderson; one sister, Harriett Horine of Rigdon; four grandchildren, Melissa (husband, Steven) Gordon of Summitville, James (wife, Angela) Hill of Summitville, Anton "Bill" Happel of Anderson, and Thomas Happel of Anderson; and four great-grandchildren, Sean Gordon, Robert Gordon, Shanna Hill, and James P. Hill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hugh "Bill" Bean; and brothers and sisters, Sally Riddell, Joe Lamb, George Lamb, Mary Bowlin, Lillian Chandler, Wesley Christopher Lamb, and Susie Abresch.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastor R. Larry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Simpson Cemetery, Greentown.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, May 1, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel.
