Monty Earl Smith

Monty Earl Smith, 83, of Anderson, passed away on March 6, 2019 at Community Hospital of Anderson. He was born in Anderson, on February 20, 1936, the son of the late Charles E. and Garnet (Kirkpatrick) Smith. He was a member of the U.S. Navy Seebees from 1953-1961 and was a proud passenger on the Indy Honor Flight. He worked at Marsh Foodliner for a period of time. In 1964 he was hired at Delco-Remy where he worked in production until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of UAW Local #662, Fellowship Lodge F&AM #681, the Scottish Rite and the American Legion. He was also a Deacon at Central Christian Church. He was an accomplished artist, well known for his artwork on canvas, as well as murals on vans. He loved sharing his talent by teaching, as well as painting. Monty knew no strangers and loved sharing stories and a joke with whoever he stopped to talk to. Monty is survived by his wife of 41 years, Phyllis Smith; children, Christina (Tom) Alstott of Indianapolis, Mitchell (Mary) Smith of Anderson and Joseph Smith of Indianapolis; step-son, Timothy Bridges of Anderson; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Charlene (Ron) Holsinger of Gaston, Alberta Biddle of Anderson, and John Keller of Oregon; sister-in-law, JoAnne (Ralph) Hadlow; brother-in-law, Roger Ellis; seven nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Pastor Rick Vale officiating. Burial will follow, with military honors, at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial Contributions may be made to Central Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.
