Mary Ann Downing

PENDLETON- Mary Ann (Pegg) Downing, 74, passed away at her home on May 25, 2024 after a brave battle with cancer.

She was born December 6,1949 in Anderson, Indiana, a daughter of the late Robert L. “Bob” and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” (Hart) Pegg and was a Pendleton resident for most of her life.

Mary was a 1968 graduate of Pendleton High School. She received an associate degree in business from Vincennes University and also attended Indiana State University.  Mary relished engaging with patrons as an owner / operator of Downing’s Old Trail restaurant before retiring in late 2021.  She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha service organization and PHHS Football Mom’s Club for many years.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Douglas Alan “Doug” Downing whom she married on August 1, 1971 at Pendleton First United Methodist Church; three sons, Jarod Alan (AnnCatherine) Downing of Indianapolis, Eric Douglas (Molly) Downing of Fishers and Paul Robert Downing of Pendleton; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Andrew and Luke Downing and Corbin and Emma Downing; sister, Melinda (Mike) Campbell of Bloomfield; brother, Joe (Diana) Pegg of Bloomfield; and several cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Robert Pegg.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2024 with a celebration of life service at 7 p.m. at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Lahm Chapel, 211 E. State St., Pendleton with Pastor Claude Creel officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
