Marjorie Nell Schug

Marjorie Nell Schug, 87, of Pendleton, passed peacefully into the Lord’s presence Saturday, January 28, 2017.She was born September 25, 1929 in Lapel, Indiana to Arthur and Kathryn (Arnold) Waymire. Marj spent her childhood years in Lapel and Pendleton and graduated from Pendleton High School in 1947. While there she met the love of her life, Jim, a member of the Fighting Irish semi-state team for which Marj was a cheerleader.She attended Indiana University and Elkhart Medical Secretarial School. She held several secretarial positions including 25 years in the South Madison School System, from which she retired in 1989.Marj was a faithful and active member of Pendleton First United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She served as church secretary and participated in United Methodist Women, Chancel Choir, and J.O.Y. Choir. She also loved assisting and helping direct the Pendleton Easter Pageant for many years.Marj loved books and reading and was a board member of the Pendleton Community Library and Friends of the Library. During her board tenure the current library was constructed. She was a long time member of the Olivian Society.She and Jim were avid travelers and visited all 50 states including two church mission trips to Alaska. She loved flowers and vegetable gardening, was an excellent cook, and loved hosting family dinners with Jim. She was well known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies with walnuts. She baked cookies for her family, and for Dale Hollow campers, snowmobilers, hungry college students, and many others.Marj was a woman of great faith and set a loving example for her son Stephen (Pamela) Schug of Pendleton, daughter Kathryn (John) Yocum of Indianapolis, and daughter Patricia (Larry Lehnerz) Schug of Waldport, Oregon. She was affectionately known as “Nana” to her grandchildren Ryan (Courtney) Barkdull of Pendleton, Ben (Jessica) Schug of McCordsville, Jennifer (Aaron) Black of Pendleton, Scot (Sara Balbach) Young of Deltona, Florida, Synthia (Aaron) Edelstein of San Diego, California, Natalie (Lucas) DeShong of Pendleton, Karina (Joe) Wellman of Greenfield, and Rebecca (Brent Morris) Cox of Greenfield. She was also survived by 11 great grandchildren, and special nephew Kurt (Beckie) Kahl of Pendleton, and special niece Karen (Darrel) Noland of Plainfield, as well as several other nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Schug; her parents, Arthur and Kathryn Waymire; and sisters, Martha Milner, Marianne Miller and Susie Waymire.A visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Lahm Chapel, 211 E. State St., Pendleton, Indiana 46064 and from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Pendleton First United Methodist Church, 225 W. State St. with services beginning at 11 a.m. officiated by Pastor Doug Walker. Burial will follow in Grove Lawn Cemetery, Pendleton. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Pendleton First United Methodist Church, 225 W. State St., Pendleton, IN 46064.
