Luise M. Davis

April 9, 1912 — December 21, 2009

Luise M. Davis, 97, Noblesville, passed away in the evening of Monday, December 21, 2009, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, despite her valiant but brief and tragic struggle to overcome pneumonia and other complications resulting from two severe accidental falls taken in her home during the early morning hours of Thursday, December 17, 2009.
She was born in Germany on April 9, 1912, to August Friedrich Seel and Marie Sophie (Grotzer) Seel just four days after the unsinkable British HMS Titanic struck an iceberg and went down off the coast of New Foundland, Canada, on the 5th day of April. So, it has been a while. Her birthplace was Dotzheim, a suburb of Wiesbaden, which is the capital city of Hessen Province located on the north bank in the bend of the Rhein River opposite Mainz which happens to be the capital city of Rheinland-Pflaz Province.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 61 years, James Richard Davis of Noblesville; her niece, Stefanie Nies; her sister-in-law, Else Seel; her grandnephew, Christian Nies; and her nieces husband, Guenther Nies, all of Dotzheim, Germany; her close friends, James F. and Wilma Jean Roberts of Lapel, Marty and Marsha Thieme, Ron and Sally Thieme, Peter Watson, and Robin Miller of Noblesville.
Luise was married to Davis by the Heiratsregistrar in the Wiesbaden Rathaus on January 15, 1948, after having waited for their military approval for about nine months. They were then required to leave Germany within 60 days as sentiment and policy was strongly against fraternization.
Luise was an accomplished journeyman dressmaker who supported herself successfully for a dozen years or so during the WWII years in Germany prior to meeting her husband. In this country, she also made drapes and furniture slipcovers for about three years while her husband was in the Air Force, but mainly was an excellent housewife to him.
Both of her parents; her two brothers, Oskar and Otto Seel, died in Germany several years ago; and her younger sister, Elfriede Plessner, died in St. Louis, MO over thirty years ago. Luise has survived just about all of her family while having led an upstanding life.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Monday, December 28, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Indianapolis.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon Monday, December 28, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
