Ms. Lolita M. Childes

d. April 19, 2020

Lolita M. Childes, age 95, passed away on April 19, 2020 at Bethany Pointe Health Campus. Her death was a result of the COVID-19 virus. Lolita was a lifelong resident of Anderson raised by her loving parents George and Doris (Beaty) Montgomery. At Andeson High School she met upperclassman Don Childes. They were married after her graduation and before he began World War 2 military training. They were blessed with two sons, Douglas and Bradley. Lolita cherished the role of being a mother and some of her favorite memories were of family travels together. She assisted with anything needed within the Childes family business. Locals may remember Lolita behind the cosmetics counter at J C Penney’s where she received numerous sales awards and worked until the store closure. Others may remember her in her retirement job as a door greeter at Brown- Butz- Diedring Funeral Home. Lolita was a volunteer for many local organizations but none greater than her 15 + year commitment to Bethany Pointe. There she became known as the Bingo Lady. Lolita was a very sociable person who had a wide circle of female friendships that she cherished. She loved to cook and entertain. Easter became an annual tradition of her home overflowing with four generations of family friends. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, reading, and took pride in mowing her lawn until nearly 90 years old. 5:00 p.m. sharp was always Happy Hour for her. Her legacy remains her devoted family: Doug (Linda) Childes of Urbandale, Iowa and Brad (Antha) Childes of Anderson, Indiana. Grandchildren include: Jana Childes, Thomas Childes, and Nic Childes. Great-grandchildren are: Hayden, Lily, Keaton, and Everett. As per Lolita’s wishes, she has been cremated. Burial in Jones Cemetery will be held at a later date. Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service and Crematory is handling the arrangements.
