Leonard Wesley Austin, 90, Anderson, passed away December 8, 2016 at his residence after a sudden illness. He was born March 19, 1926, in Terre Haute, the son of Wesley and Myrtle Austin. He was a 1944 graduate of Wiley High School, Indiana State University in 1949 and served in the US Army. Leonard taught two years at Knox High School before moving to Anderson. He began his career in Anderson at North Anderson Junior High School in 1951. He was principal of Central Junior High School, Northside Junior High School, and Highland High School. He was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Special Services in 1978. Mr. Austin served as Superintendent of Anderson Community Schools from 1980 to 1984. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Anderson Country Club and Edgewood Country Club, Past President of the Lion’s Club, Elk’s Lodge and served on the Board of East Maplewood Cemetery. He had a great love for his family and was an avid golfer having 5 hole-in-one’s. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Armstrong Austin of Anderson; two children, David Thomas Gilmore (Beverly) Austin of Kokomo and Allyson Gloria (Jeff) Reed of Anderson; four grandchildren, Derrick David Austin, Anna Marie Austin, Ralph Ryan Reed & finance Valerie and Ross Leonard Reed. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Gilmore Austin in 1992; his in-laws, Dolores and Thomas Pritchard; three siblings, Christine Wild, Ralph Austin and Harold Austin. Service will be at 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 12 at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Bishop Bill Smalley officiating. Burial will be in East Maplewood Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. to1:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church Women Scholarship for Teachers, Christian Center or The Evans Scholarship.
