Lawrence Vern Heiny

Lawrence Vern Heiny, 93, Lapel, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Hooverwood Nursing Home in Indianapolis following a period of declining health. He was born on December 15, 1920, in Madison County, Indiana to George and Iona (Conway) Heiny. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1938 and received a perfect attendance award for never being absent or tardy in the entire 12 years of school. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WWII. He served in Company G 63rd Infantry in Hawaii, New Guinea, the Philippines, and in South Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star. Lawrence retired in 1986 from the former Delco Remy division of General Motors in Anderson after 40 years of employment. He had served on the Stony Creek Township advisory board and as the township trustee from 1967-1970. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel; the Lapel Lions Club; the Lapel American Legion Post 212; and he sang with the former Lapel Jubilee Chorus. He enjoyed basketball, golf, and hunting when he was young and bowling later. Above all catching fish was Lawrence's passion. He also kept and raised tropical fish which he sold from a shop in his garage. In later years he enjoyed gardening and he grew vegetables, fruit, and flowers including orchids. He is survived by five daughters, Diana Stafford of Fortville, Sharon Yoder and Cathy Heiny both of Indianapolis, Janet Van der Veer of Fairfax, VA, and Lynnette Heiny of Albuquerque, NM; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Delcie Pauline (Smith) Heiny ; and a brother, Alvin Heiny. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, January 13, 2014, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion will perform military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 606, Lapel, Indiana 46051-0606; Lapel Lions Club, P. O. Box 488, Lapel, Indiana 46051-0488; or Lapel American Legion Post 212, P. O. Box 789, Lapel, Indiana 46051-0789.
