Kenneth Edward Woodward

Kenneth Edward "Kenny" Woodward, 88, Lapel, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015, at his home following a brief illness. He was born on March 16, 1926, in Perkinsville, Indiana to Lowell and Mary (Williams) Woodward. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1944, and was well known to Madison County residents for his 4 years of Varsity basketball. Newspaper clippings at the time referred to him as "that chunky redhead fireball" who often rallied his teammates to victory. In 2005, when Lapel again went to the state finals, he and his surviving teammates were honored as part of the town celebration. Kenneth retired from Allstate Insurance in Anderson in 1988, and was also honored as a WW II Navy Veteran with a trip to Washington, D.C. Kenny was an avid golfer winning several local tournaments. He loved going to play at various PGA golf courses across the nation. Kenny will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He gave loving care to all his daughters as their "fix it" man, listening ear, advisor, and toy maker for his grandkids. He is survived by three daughters, Connie (husband, David) Spears of Kokomo, Nancy(husband, Larry) Davis of Houston, TX. and Terry Woodward of Indianapolis; four grandchildren, David Breece and Kelli Wainwright of Kokomo, Todd Chen of Houston, TX and Jason Chen of Los Angeles, CA; four great-grandchildren and his long-time companion Alice Roberts. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 45 years, Martha (Spegal) Woodward; and two brothers, Lowell, Jr., and James Woodward. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion Post 212 will conduct military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel and the Lapel Masonic Lodge No. 625 will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 6:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 606, Lapel, Indiana 46051-0606.
