Joseph N. Mitchell

Joseph N. "Joe" Mitchell, 86, Lapel, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at his home following an extended illness. During his final hours he was with his family. He was born on March 9, 1927, in Anderson, Indiana to F. E. and Josephine Mitchell. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1947 and received a bachelor's degree in 1950 and a master's degree in 1964 both from Ball State University. He was proud to serve his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Joe was one of the original teachers on the staff at Madison Heights High School where he retired after teaching for 36 years. He also worked for the former Anderson Savings and Loan for 30 years. He was a member of the Indiana Audubon Society. He is survived by wife of 64 years, Kathryn (Smith) Mitchell four children, Nancy (husband, Jack) Hartley of Sarasota, FL, Mark (wife, Maryann) Mitchell of Indianapolis, Emily Jane (husband, Clair) Stark of North Port, FL, and Jennifer Musick of Pendleton; five grandchildren, Susan Perciful, Carrie Panning, Addie Clark, Greg Goettmann Musick, and Jacob Musick; and four great-grandchildren, Ross Panning, Max Panning, Kennedy Clark, and Sidney Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jack and David Mitchell. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel. Burial will follow in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, May 3, 2013, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, 3499 South Bird Sanctuary Road, Connersville, IN 47331.
