Joseph A Helpling

Joseph “Joe” Alexander Helpling, 82, a life-long resident of Anderson, Indiana passed away July 2, 2019 after a 23 year battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born September 17, 1936, in Anderson, Indiana, the son of Osmond and Nellie Helpling. He is survived by his children, Chris (Lisa) Helpling, Karla (Rick) McMahan, Kent (Debra) Helpling; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; siblings, Mary Ann Douglas, James (Brenda) Helpling, Martha Helpling; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Osmond “Sonny” Helpling, Jr. After attending St. Mary’s and Columbia Military Academy, Joe began working in the family business, Helpling Oil Company. He was instrumental in building and managing Anderson’s, first, Mr. Quick Automatic Car Wash and Deep Rock Gas Stations with family. He spent many days assisting his Uncle Joe Helpling with Sun Valley Speedway. Later in life he worked for Freightliner and then he was an owner-operator with Helpling Trucking. His masterful entrepreneurial skills continued until a week before he passed; always thinking of ways to make money. The family’s fondest memories include his love for the numerous family card games, his passion for boating on many Indiana Lakes and his enjoyment for practical jokes. A Memorial Service will be held at East Maplewood Cemetery on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 1:00 pm with A Celebration of Life following at Mounds Park.
