John William Gunter

John William Gunter, 89, of Anderson, passed away on May 7, 2020 at his residence. He was born on January 4, 1931 in Anderson to the late Cecil and Elsie (Carson) Gunter. John was a graduate of Yorktown High School and served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked on the Anderson City Police Department for 28 years retiring in 1993. He served as the Madison County Sheriff for eight years. John was in the Naval Reserves. He was on the Board of Directors for Youth for Christ and Liberty Christian Schools, YMCA, Edgewood Town Council, Police Commissioner, Lions Club, Masonic Fellowship Lodge, Indiana Sherriff Association, Speakers Bureau, Speakers Unlimited of Ohio, Spotlight speaker of Indianapolis, Indiana State Criminal Justice Board, Instructor at Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash, Kentucky Colonel, and known as the “Singing Sheriff”. He is survived by his wife, Carlene Westerfield Gunter; children, Candace (Roger) Noland of Anderson, John Gunter (Tammy) Gunter of Anderson, Mathew (Sherry) Gunter of Anderson, Tim (Maren) Westerfield of Anderson; sisters, Lu (Jack) Leaky, Diane Wojtysiak, Kay Stoops; step sister, Linda Workman; grandchildren, Jason Hoppes, Kamella Vernick, Dean Hoppes, Sam Westerfield, Tyler Noland, Caitlin Barrow, Lindsey Vandevanderk, Shea Ziegler, Holly Conlon, Jeremiah Gunter, Melah (Dennis) Noland, Jacob Gunter, Ryan, Patrick, Erica Schwinghammer; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Joy Gunter; daughter, Christie Gunter; and brother, Robert Gunter. A visitation with social distancing will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory, 515 E. 53rd St., Anderson, IN 46013. A private family service will be held on Saturday. Anyone from the public who would like to honor John, please feel free to view the procession at approximately 11:15 am on Saturday in front of the Sheriff Department or the Courthouse. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Anderson Protection League or the Madison County Humane Society.
