Mr. & Mrs. John & Virginia Hurley

d. January 26, 2017

They met at a wedding. John G. (Jack) and Virginia G. (Ginny) Hurley made their final trip together Thursday, January 26, 2017. Jack was the son of Dr. JR and Shirley Hurley of Daleville. Ginny was the daughter of John and Esther Graham of Logansport where she was raised on a farm. Ginny was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita Hughes. Jack was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Shoemaker. Jack and Ginny married on May 30, 1954 and then followed Jack’s Army posting to Fort Benning, GA and Fort Riley in Kansas. He was a First Lieutenant and she taught servicemen English. They soon returned to Indiana and began lengthy teaching careers in Attica, Lapel and Anderson. Jack also coached basketball, baseball and cross country. They took their children, Kim and Al, to almost every game Jack coached. Jack later moved to the new Northside Jr. High in Anderson. Ginny continued her education career in Anderson at Central Jr. High School. She soon moved to Anderson High and held the title of Dean of Girls for 20 years. This was during the turbulent times of the late 60’s through the 70’s. She was known as being a strong advocate of personal responsibility and helped a generation of girls foster their commitment to education. She felt her girls could attain anything given the support, guidance, and motivation the school system could provide. Jack and Ginny loved Anderson High School, attending games and events their entire lives in that city. Jack obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1954. Ginny’s degree was from Ball State Teachers College. They both had a deep love for Indiana University, where they obtained their Masters in Education. They passed on this love to their two children and five grandchildren, who all earned degrees from IU. They had football season tickets for over 50 years and congregated with brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren on game days. The Hurleys provided a sterling example of how to live a moral and giving life. Ginny volunteered at the St. John’s Hospital Gift Shop for many decades. They were dedicated and active members of their church, 1st Presbyterian in Anderson, where Ginny served as a session member. Jack took his grandsons to many of their sporting events during their school years and would never miss a game or match. Playing golf with his brother, son and grandsons was one of his greatest joys. Jack, who never met a stranger, taught his family that the most important thing you could give a person was your time. His father had taught him to always have time for people. While this tragedy is a great shock, Jack Ginny made their final trip home as the true partners they always were and their energy and love for each other will be intertwined for eternity. They leave Jack’s brother, Dr. J. Richard Hurley (Sherry) of Muncie, Son Al (Kristi) of Ft. Wayne, daughter Kim of Anderson, grandchildren Joe Weis (Jennifer) of St. Louis, Kelci Burnham (Justin) of Ft. Wayne, Emily Layne (James) of Fishers, Lindsey Hurley of Ft. Wayne, John Weis of St. Louis, great-granddaughter Hannah Burnham and great-grandchild Layne to-be as well as many nieces and nephews from their large and loving extended family. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory, Anderson, with Pastor Kevin Bausman officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hurley’s church, 1st Presbyterian in Anderson, IN.
