John Rex Upton

February 3, 1946 — May 11, 2011

John Rex Upton, 65, Lapel, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville following a fourteen-year triumph over cancer.
He was born on February 3, 1946, in Anderson, Indiana to Rex and Norma (Snyder) Upton.
He graduated from Lapel High School in 1964 and served in the U. S. Army where he served two tours in Vietnam.
John retired in 1995 from the Indianapolis Police Department K-9 Unit after 23 years of employment and retired from the United States Post office in 2005 after 10 years of employment.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and attended worship at TLC; Lapel Lions Club; Lapel American Legion Post 212, and the Lapel Masonic Lodge No. 625; he was an avid fisherman and loved to cook, especially for his family. His children and grandchildren meant the world to him; and he was a tireless volunteer and helped at places like the Lucille Raines Residence in Indianapolis.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lynanne "Lynn" (Lutz) Upton; two children, Laura Elizabeth (husband, Bill) McGuire of Alexandria and John Wesley "Wes" (wife, Katie) Upton of Brownsburg; one grandson, Austin Rex McGuire; one granddaughter, Cecilia Rose Upton; one brother James (wife, Rosilyn) Upton of Lapel; one sister, Rebecca (husband, Mike) Stanley of Greenwood; and his mother, Norma Louise (Snyder) Upton.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Dr. Randy McQueen and Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion Post 212 will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, May 13, 2011, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. There will be a Masonic memorial service at 5:30 pm at the funeral home.
