John L. May, 77, of Anderson, passed away June 18, 2016 after an extended illness.
He was born on July 13, 1938 in Indianapolis to the late John S. and Ruth A. (Armstrong) May and moved to Anderson in 1973. He graduated from Southport High School, American Institute of Banking and Graduate School of Banking from University of Wisconsin.
He was a commercial banker for over 54 years, working at the Peoples Bank & Trust Company in Indianapolis, Union Bank & Trust Company in Franklin, Citizens Banking Company in Anderson, American Federal Savings & Loan Association, National City Bank and then retiring from First Merchants Bank.
John served on several boards over the years, including Past Advisor, Junior Achievement of Indianapolis, Past President, Indianapolis American Institute of Banking, Past President Bankers Installment Credit Association of Central Indiana, Past Advisor and Committee Member, Junior Achievement of Madison County, Past Chairman, Anderson City Revolving Loan Fund, Past President, Madison County Bankers Association, Past Director, Anderson Business Development Corporation, Past Co-chairmen of Finance Committee, Treasurer, Director, Wepehani Girl Scout Council, Past Treasurer, Secretary, Director and Finance Committee Chairman, Ambassador Committee, Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Past President, Treasurer, Director, The Center for Mental Health, Past Treasurer, Board of Directors, Madison County Community Health Center, Past Treasurer, Board of Directors, Urban League of Madison County, Member Headstart Policy Council and Past President, Treasurer Community Home Health Care. He received the Thanks Badge from Wapehani Girl Scout Council in 1982, President Award from Alexandria Monroe Chamber of Commerce in 1990, Volunteer of the Year from United Way of Madison County in 2002 and the Distinguished Citizen Award from Crossroads of American Council, Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife, Marta G. May; three daughters, Melinda (Tim) Stinnett, Angela May and Susan (Bret) Richards; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Nancy (Ray) Hart and Louise May; two nephews, Jason and Joshua Hudson and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert May; sister, Doris Edwards.
Services will be 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Pastor Marc Adams officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be 1:00-4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
