John Henry Gray, 98, of Anderson, passed away November 3, 2015 at Community Hospital of Anderson.
He was born May 11, 1917, in Anderson, the son of the late Samuel Levi and Mary A. (McIntire) Gray, and lived here his entire life.
On July 1, 1951, he married Mona R. Pettigrew. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon arriving home he continued his public service in the Anderson Fire Department for 32 years, achieving the rank of Captain before his retirement in 1978. He was one of the oldest surviving firefighters in the state of Indiana. He was an active member of the Anderson Seventh Day Adventist Church, a Master 32 Degree Mason and a member of the Lowrey L.I.F.E. Club.
John is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Garth) Jones of Anderson; grandsons, Jeremy D. (Cindy) Jones of Huron, OH and Joshua J. (Michele) Jones of Anderson; and great-grandchildren, Keiten, Johanna and Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona R. Gray; and siblings, Charles, Dorothy, Ann, and Georgia (Flo).
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Friday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory with Pastor Lee Whitman officiating. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by VFW Post 266.
Friends may call from 12-2pm Friday at the funeral home.
