John Gardner Nelson, 84, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 21, 1935 in Madison County to the late Charles Wood & Cora Pearl (Gardner) Nelson Sr. John graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1953. He co-owned and operated Mark Tool & Die for several years. John was a member of Wilkinson Church of Christ. He enjoyed camping but his love was his family and supporting them in all aspects, especially following their sports. John is survived by his wife, Alberta (Whitinger) Nelson; daughters, Cindy (husband, Hal) VanDuyn, Sandy (husband, Dennis) Mercer, Kelly (husband, Gary) Tice, Lisa (husband, Jack) Lawrence, Deborah (husband, Kirby) Perry, & Denise (husband, Norm) Karch; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Kathleen “Billie” Luther-Williams; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter, Theresa Nelson; 3 siblings; and great-grandson, Jackson Tice. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 17, at Wilkinson Church of Christ, with Pastor Ryan McCarty officiating. Burial will be at McCray Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilkinson Church of Christ and an hour prior to the services.
