John E. King, 81, a lifelong resident of Anderson, passed from Earth to Heaven to meet his Lord on May 20, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was born August 17,1939 and attended Anderson High School. John started his career at Beach’s Filling Station on Broadway where he later nicknamed himself “Goober”. After that, John worked for Greer Steel Company and later went on to attend Apprenticeship School to become a Tool and Die Maker. He worked in his trade at Detail Tool & Die Company, Anderson Tool & Die Company, Supreme Tool & Die Company until starting King Tool Company. He went on to join corporate manufacturing working for Excello Corporation and ultimately retired from General Motors Corporation in 2000. John was a true tradesman and used his craft until he no longer could. He was very generous with his time and resources and would lend a hand to anyone that would ask him for help. John was a “Mr. Fixit” guy who self taught himself to master anything…a true man’s man. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with everyone and was usually storytelling of times gone by. Besides his family, John had two passions, farming and golf. He enjoyed working the ground on his John Deere and swinging the club with the GM guys every Tuesday and Thursday while they circuited various golf courses. He was rarely found sitting in a chair unless it was to jot down poems that he would write. He also enjoyed traveling and especially the last trip he took with his daughters to the Puget Sound in Seattle. John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Iona King and his 2 daughters; Karen Flint (Troy) and Tammy Hutton (Brian); 7 grandchildren, Matthew Hutton, Kelly Katera (Ashish), Dan Hutton (Sara), Kagney Winegardner (Matt), Kelsey Cain (Anthony), Kirby Flint-Embree (Dave), & Karley Reece (Steven); 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way; a brother, Harvey King; and 2 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and Ruby King; brother, Leslie King; and sister, Marilyn Allen. Services will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, May 25, at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory. He will be laid to rest in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
