John E. Gilbert, 97, of Anderson, passed away quietly in his sleep at Community Hospital on July 5, 2016.

He was born to the late John and Anna (Beber) Gilbert on September 11, 1918 in Elwood and has resided in Anderson since 1953. He retired from Delco-Remy after 43 years of employment.

John was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 563, American Legion Post 127, 40 & 8 Voiture 510, V.F.W. Post 266 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Genevieve Gilbert of Anderson; six sons, Larry E. (Glendia) Gilbert of Markleville, Mike (Diane) Gilbert of Anderson, Joe (Rita) Gilbert of Sandwich, IL, Jim (Elaine) Gilbert of Yorksprings, PA, Steve (Mary Ann) Gilbert of Lexington, S.C. and Andy (Lorna) Gilbert of Ishanimaki, Japan; fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; sister, Catherine (Huey) Hook of Elkhart, IN and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and William Gilbert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Msgr. Robert Sell officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside rites by V.F.W. Post 266 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the 40 & 8 Nurses Training Program.
