Jean Layton, 88, Lapel, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville following a brief illness.She was born on August 26, 1931, in Madison County, Indiana to Wade Tull and Mattie Belle (Hunter) Snyder.Jean was graduated from Lapel High School in 1949 and received a nursing degree from the former Indiana Central College in 1966. She married Jim Layton on June 5, 1949 and he preceded her in death in 2001.She retired from Riverview Hospital as a registered nurse after 30 years of service.Jean was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church; the Lapel Lions Club; and WOW Red Hats. She sang as one of The Three Notes trio since Junior High School which was composed of Jean, Carolyn Wilson, Carolyn Begley, and then Barbara Forrer.She was an avid fan of the Lapel Bulldogs and the Houston Ball Hawgs and she sang the national anthem at the Houston Astrodome in 1991.In 1983, Jean recorded a gospel album titled "One More River to Cross" at The Barn recording studio in Alexandria. The title song and "May the Lord Walk Beside You" were selected by the Indiana Gospel Music Association as the Best of Indiana in 1990 and the title song took second place at the Indiana Gospel Music song of the year awards.Jean worked in the Stony Creek Township Trustees office along side husband, Jim, who was the trustee and assessor for 28 years.She is survived by three sons, Greg, Rex, and Pruitt; six grandchildren, Alicia Madeksho (Tim) of Friendswood, TX; Jodi Layton, M. D. of New Orleans, LA; Jennifer Leonetti (Pat) of Scottsdale, AZ; Kevin Layton of Phoenix; Jackie Layton of Denver; and David Layton of Lacy, WA; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Austin Madeksho, and Jamesby and William Leonetti; two nieces, Beverly Kellams (Roger) and Carolyn Mohler (Steve); and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Stevenson (Kaye Don) and Jan Baker (Jim).Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents, Charles and Mary (Stephenson) Snyder, Harvey and Dora (Bell) Hunter; one brother Wayne C. Snyder; a sister-in-law, Alva Snyder; a niece Eleanor Blankenship; a nephew, Steve Kellams; a childhood friend, Barbara Richardson; and three trio pianists, Marguerite Walker, Susie Romine, and Donna Scott.A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 25, 2020, at Hersberger-Bozell Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel, Indiana with Pastor Susan Hobson officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery.Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at the funeral home.The family is requiring that all visitors wear a face mask or they will not be admitted to the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Scholarship Fund; the Lapel Lions Club; the Lapel High School Music or Athletic Departments.Online condolences: www.hersbergerfuneralhome.com
