d. May 12, 2024

Jan Ross Turner, aged 86, passed away due to complications following a brief hospitalization at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born in 1937, in Sweetwater, Oklahoma, and spent most of his adult life in Carmel and his final 20 years in Knightstown, Indiana.

A distinguished graduate of Oregon State University, Jan earned his PHD in Microbiology, which propelled him into a significant career in natural products research. He dedicated over two decades of his professional life to Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, where he worked as a Senior Research Scientist from 1973, until his retirement in 1996. His pioneering work in antimicrobial research, notably in the evaluation of antifungal agents and the development of novel test systems, left an indelible mark on the field. His innovative methodologies enabled the rapid determination of antibiotic resistance, advancing the capabilities of microbial research. He received numerous awards for his work.

Jan’s personal family life was filled with love and family. He married Ortie Marlene Turner in 1962, who predeceased him. The couple was blessed with two children: Kevin (Michele) Turner of Carmel, Indiana, and Paula Turner Schneider (Greg) of Terre Haute, Indiana. After Marlene’s passing, Jan found love again and married Judith Allford White in 2003. They were fortunate to share many adventures together before her passing in 2012. He was a beloved stepfather to Stephanie White-Longworth (Terry) and Keith White (Tami) of Wilkinson, Indiana.

Jan was a grandfather to five grandchildren: Graham, Duncan, Julia, Ana, and Ross Turner, and step-grandfather to seven, including Sara Longworth, Samantha Phillips, Melissa Longworth-Brown (Chandler), Jake Rogers (Kate), Samantha Rogers, Olivia White, and Abbi White, along with five step great-grandchildren.

An avid reader, accomplished pianist, excellent tennis player, an enthusiastic wood worker, he enjoyed camping, hiking and summers at Dale Hollow where he taught his children to ski. Jan was a man of many talents and interests. He was deeply admired for his kindness and cherished by his family and friends.
