James Eldon Schmitt

August 20, 1934 — August 12, 2023

James “Jim” Eldon Schmitt, 88, of Pendleton, passed away August 12, 2023 in Indianapolis, IN. Jim was born August 20, 1934 to Earl Eldon and Dorothy Rebecca (Grant) Schmitt in Anderson, IN. He attended Tri-State (Trine) University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Jim met and married Judith “Judy” (Smith) and went on to have 2 children, Michael “Mike” and Maureen. He began a career as a foreman at General Motors, where he then retired from in 1992.

When he was not working, he was ardently working his farm ground and raising Charolais Cattle. Jim enjoyed the outdoors whether it be hunting, fishing or woodworking. He filled their home with his meticulously crafted wood projects. Jim was also an avid Indy 500 spectator, he enjoyed watching all car races and sports. He taught his children to take care of and protect the ones you love in many ways. Sometimes it would be a reminder to vote, as he was a very patriotic man. At one time, Jim had help run the Operational Republican Headquarters. He supported his fellow veterans by also becoming a member of the Pendleton Amvets of Indiana Post 26.  Sunday mornings were spent beside his wife Judy as they attended Pendleton Christian Church. As his family grew, Jim’s quiet but powerful protectiveness was passed to his children and now to his 2 grandchildren.  Thankfully his ability to make light of a situation and add a little funny here and there rounded out his love and devotion to his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim is survived by his wife; sister, Norma Lynn Hiatt; children, Michael “Mike” Schmitt and Maureen Schmitt; grandchildren, Eldon and Macie Schmitt; and several nieces and nephews.
