James Anderson Griffin

June 8, 1935 — April 10, 2014

James Anderson Griffin, 78, Lapel, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Community Hospital of Anderson following an extended illness. He was born on June 8, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri to Floyd and Thelma (Spink) Griffin. He graduated from Lapel High School in 1954. James retired in 1973 as a Chief Gunners Mate from the U. S. Navy after 20 years of service and also retired from Hughes Aircraft and Naval Avionics. He was a member of Ford Street United Methodist Church in Lapel; the Lapel American Legion Post 212 where he was a past commander and had served as chaplain for many years; Lapel Masonic Lodge No. 625; Pendleton Am Vets Post 26; Fortville V. F. W. Post 6904; Anderson D. A. V. Chapter 12; Association of Aviation Ordnance Men; and the Sons of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bettie (Byrd) Griffin; three children, Andy James (wife, Starla) Griffin of Anderson, Gail Springer of Lapel, and Mark Griffin St. Petersburg, FL; six grandchildren, Jennifer Griffin, Nick Griffin, Molly Springer, Jon Springer, Anais Griffin, and Victoria Griffin; and two great-grandchildren, Sylas Griffin and Kaydence Springer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Griffin and Thelma Griffin Dooley; his step-father, Henry Dooley; a grandson, Scott Springer; and an aunt, Eloise Muchmore. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Monday, April 14, 2014, at Ford Street United Methodist Church in Lapel with Pastor Steve Holdzkom officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion will perform military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Sunday, April 13, 2014, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Committee on Overseas Relief or the Lapel American Legion Scholarship Fund.
