Irene (Sears) Jackson, Pendleton (formerly) Audrey Irene Jackson, 96, passed away Sunday March 10th at her home in Desert Hot Springs, CA, with her youngest son Jerry & wife Lita at her side. She was born in Ovid in 1916, the daughter of Glen (Pop) Sears and Jennie Ruth (Stanford) Sears, long time residents of Pendleton and Lapel. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Thomas of Anderson, to whom she was married 68 years; and sister, Jane Walker of Arcadia, CA. She is survived by sons Jim (Norma) of Apollo Beach, FL; Jerry (Lita) of Desert Hot Springs, CA; grandchildren Mark, Denise, Kevin, Elijah; three great-grandchildren; sister Ann (White) Rowlison (age 101) of Bowling Green, KY; Marcella (McGillen) Abbott of Shelbyville, formerly of Anderson; Barbra Sackett of Tampa; and six nieces and nephews. Irene attended Pendleton schools, graduating in 1934. She was employed by the Pendleton Banking Co., prior to moving to Union City when the Hardy Mfg. Co. relocated. In 1956 she and Tom moved to Arcadia, CA, where she worked for the City of Arcadia, retiring after 17 years as the Purchasing Agent. Her retirement years were spent in Desert Hot Springs. Irene enjoyed sewing hobbies. She and a friend created the braided rug that adorns the entry of the Pendleton Historical Museum. She was an expert quilter, with articles published in quilting magazines about her work. She created many outstanding quilts and wall hangings for family, relatives and friends. Burial will be in Grovelawn Cemetery in Pendleton at a later date. Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel is handling of the arrangements.
