George M. Whittaker

December 15, 1931 — May 25, 2017

George M. Whittaker, age 85, left this life and took up new residence on May 25, 2017 after several years of battling Alzheimer’s. Born in Anderson, Indiana December 15, 1931 to Paul and Chrissie Whittaker, “Buddy” was an adored and pampered only child and the apple of his mother’s eye. He graduated in 1950 from Anderson High School where he met the love of his life, Barbara Stottlemyer. They married in 1951. George was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he served as a photo interpreter during the Korean War. Following the service, he worked for Guide Division of General Motors Corporation as a machine repairman for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Following retirement, George spent many happy years teaching his grandsons to fish, growing fresh vegetables in his garden, and traveling throughout these beautiful United States. He had the great joy of visiting the Holy Lands where he walked in the footsteps of his Lord and Savior. He was a fifty year member of Fellowship Lodge #681 and an active member of the Madison County Shriners. He spent many hours volunteering with the shrine transportation unit ensuring that children who needed assistance could receive the medical care they needed. He was a leader of Boy Scout Troop #229. He served with the Anderson Literacy Coalition and the United Methodist flood relief unit in Louisiana. And he was a jack of all trades at New Horizons United Methodist Church where he was a long time member. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; children, Ginger (Mark) Bollinger, Brian (Barb) Whittaker, and Brenda Whittaker; grandsons; Tony (Kirsten) Bollinger, Adam (Cristi) Bollinger, Tyler (Casey) Whittaker, and Ian (Erica) Whittaker; five great grandchildren and one on the way. The family is extremely grateful for the wonderful care provided by Primrose Retirement Communities, Home Instead Senior Care, and Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Visitation will be Sunday, May 28 from 2-5 p.m. followed by a Masonic Service at Brown Butz Diedring Funeral Service in Anderson. Funeral services will be held at New Horizons United Methodist Church in Anderson on Monday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. with calling one hour prior at the church, Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Indiana Chapter, 50 East 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240 or to New Horizons United Methodist Church, 611 E 53rd St, Anderson, IN 46013.
