George K. Allison Iii

August 25, 1929 — December 30, 2017

George K. Allison III, 88, of Anderson, IN passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30 at his home. George was born on August 25, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to George K.Jr. and Mildred K. (Vaughn) Allison. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago in 1947 and Illinois Wesleyan University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, serving as editor of the university newspaper. He earned his MBA from University of Chicago in 1958. Following college, George served in the Army and graduated from Officer Candidate School 28 in Fort Benning, Georgia. He was deployed to Korea as a Second Lieutenant in the 31st Infantry Regiment. He was a proud Army veteran and would try to travel to join his fellow officers at the annual OC-28 Association reunion. He enjoyed sharing his Korea pictures and was thrilled to take part in the Indy Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in October 2017, accompanied by his daughter. George excelled in business and served as executive vice president at First Federal of Chicago, and held various posts at financial institutions in Oklahoma and Nebraska before serving as president of First Savings of Central Indiana. He later served as president of the Anderson Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered as finance chairman of the Girl Scouts of Chicago for several years. As a youth, George participated in the American Legion junior drum and bugle corps in Chicago and his love for music stayed with him his entire life. His many hobbies over the years included his rose garden, photography, tennis, golf, spoiling his cats, and traveling. A recent bucket-list trip with eight family members in 2016 took him to the coast of Norway with Hurtigruten and to England. George looked forward to Wednesday night dinners at OB’s with Bob Moffat, Brad Rayl, and Steve Sumner and Friday nights at the Veterans of Foreign Wars. George is survived by his daughters, Susan Welty (Mark) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Jennifer Allison of San Francisco, Califorina; three grandchildren, Emily Welty Pastrana (Omar) of Richardson, Texas, Allison Welty Aguilar (Michael) of Mobile, Alabama, and Andrew Welty of Dallas, Texas; two great grandchildren, Eva and Gabriel Pastrana; nephew, William J. Allison, Jr. (Mary and daughter Berkeley) and niece, Gayle Donlon (Gerard and daughter Maureen and son Robert). He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Elsa; and brother, William J. Allison. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at Brown-Butz-Deidring Funeral Service and Crematory in Anderson. Another visitation will be from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. A memorial service with Rev. Corinne Boruff officiating will be held following the visitation at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date at East Maplewood Cemetery.
