George Edward Lackey, 98 of Anderson, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 , at his home in Primrose.
He was born on January 14, 1918, in Lapel, Indiana, to Chester Carl and Grace Victoria (Hackleman) Lackey.
George graduated in 1936 from Lapel High School and served in the U. S. Army in WWII in the Pacific Theater where he was awarded a purple heart.
He retired in 1982 from the former Delco Remy division of General Motors in Anderson after over 20 years of employment.
George was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Lapel Lions Club, an over 50 year member of the Lapel Masonic Lodge No. 625, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the United Methodist Men, and the Lapel American Legion Post 212.
He is survived by three children, Janine (husband, Rod) Compton of Frankton, Steve (wife, Pam) Lackey of Anderson, and Brian Lackey of Kissimmee, FL; four grandchildren, Chris (wife, Rhonda) Compton of Carlisle, PA, Bradley (wife, Amanda) Compton of Greenwood, Jennifer Lackey of Lapel, and David (wife, Melissa) Lackey of Taylorsville, KY; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Pettigrew of Anderson; one sister-in-law, Marlene Lackey of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Betty (Varner) Lackey; his step-mother, Jessie Lackey; a daughter, Elizabeth Sue Lackey; two brothers, Johnnie and Nolan Lackey; and two step-sisters, Sara McDonald, and Frances Schuyler.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 Main North Street, Lapel, Indiana with Pastors Dewey Miller and Dawn Cuthbert officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion Post will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, January 13, 2017, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home where a Masonic Memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm.
The family would like to thank the staff at Primrose and the members of Trinity church for their gentle care of George.
