Gary A. Coomes, 56, Anderson, died Saturday, January 17, 2009, at St. Johns Health System following an extended illness.
He was born August 7, 1952, in Indianapolis.
Gary was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was self-employed in the home security business until ill health forced him to retire.
He moved to Anderson in 2004, where he lived and loved the country life. He loved to collect cars and spent many great times with family and friends at car shows. He was a very patriotic man and was proud of the time he spent in Vietnam.
He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
Gary is survived by his wife, Renee (Willoughby) Coomes; two daughters, Valarie (husband, Aarom) Schultz of Illinois and Julie Clagg of Indianapolis; three step-sons, Brian Bohall of Greenwood, Joshua (wife, Danielle) Castor of Anderson, and Jared (wife, Michaelea) Castor of Anderson. He was a beloved Papaw to eight grandchildren, McKenna, Jessica, Skyler, Gavin, Grant, Sydney, McKenna, and Noah. He is also survived by a special dog, Shelby; and many much-loved friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 20, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Storm Officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where the Lapel American Legion Post 212 will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, January 19, 2009, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stepping Stones for Veterans, 332 West 11th Street, Anderson, Indiana 46016 or the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8605 Cameron Street, Suite 400, Silver Spring, Maryland 20910.
