Evelyn Maye Kachelein

August 31, 1930 — April 12, 2024

Evelyn Maye Kachelein, 93, of Lapel, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Sugar Fork Crossing in Anderson following an extended dementia journey with Alzheimer's Disease.

Evelyn was born August 31, 1930, in Jeffersonville, Indiana to Charles Nelson and Lorene (Bolly) Bohannan. She was a graduate of Anderson High School and Anderson College, and received a Master of Education Degree from Ball State University. Evelyn retired from the Anderson Community School Corporation with 20 years of service. She taught at Park Place and Forest Hills Elementary Schools where she began chapters of Little Hoosiers, teaching fourth grade students about Indiana history.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her devoted husband of 66 years, George Adam Kachelein Jr., two daughters, Christine Oaks and Corene Foust, two sons-in-law, Brian Selzer and Kurt Foust, and a sister and brother-in-law, Morona and Robert Watkins.

Evelyn is survived by a sister Barbara (David) Mitchel, two daughters, Cynthia Selzer and Catherine (Ronald) Metcalfe, ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was a member of the Anderson Firefighters Women’s Auxiliary, past president of the Lapel Rural Garden Club, and a member of the Lapel Lady Lions Club. She enjoyed gardening, cross stitch, sewing, painting ceramics, and travel. Evelyn and George loved camping and were able to visit 49 states, as well as Mexico and Canada.

As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel, Evelyn was able to combine her love for the Lord with her love of teaching and learning. She was Director of Christian Education, and a Bible Study Fellowship leader. She participated, served and held multiple team positions for the Walk to Emmaus, facilitated home Bible study groups, and went on a mission trip to Jamaica. Evelyn and George continued mission work when they wintered in Texas. They became involved in His Hands and Meadowlark Ministries where Evelyn was able to teach children's Bible school and instruct local women to sew using donated machines.

Even though her mind and memories were taken from her in this world, nothing could take her spirit from the Lord. Evelyn remained a true believer and a faithful prayer warrior, blessing all those around her.
