Eugene J. Zagorski, 100, of Anderson, passed away October 11, 2017, at the home of his daughter. Eugene was born, August 26, 1917, in Anderson, the son of the late John and Mary Zagorski. He resided most of his life in Anderson and attended St. Mary’s High School, where he lettered for three years in basketball and baseball. In 1935, he was named All American Forward at the National Catholic High Tournament in Chicago. He worked at Delco Remy before WWII and Guide Lamp after the war. He retired from Coca-Cola in 1982 after 34 ½ years of employment. He was a lifelong member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, VFW Post 266 and a former member of the Polish and Eagles lodges. Eugene enjoyed fly fishing for blue gill and crappie at Myers gravel pit (now Mounds Mall), catfish in the Tippecanoe River, bass in the St. Joe River and walleye and pike in upper Wisconsin. He served his country in the Army during WWII where he received five bronze stars. He served in the European Theatre, including Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and on to Erfurt, Germany. He is survived by a son, Eugene T. (Becky) Zagorski; daughter, Joan (Bret) Merriman; grandchildren, Jessica (Lisa) Poertner, Jason (Kortney) Zagorski, Ethan (Breanna) Zagorski, Alexis (Matt) Wyman, Gabriel Yattaw, Luke, Jessie, Shelby and Lexey Merriman; great grandchildren, Eli, Easton, Mason, Rex, Lyla, Claire, Drake, and Evelyn; sister, Fran Roland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded by his wife, Evelyn Zagorski; brother, Jon; sister, Alice Zagorski; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Julius Wnukowski, Helen and Bill Clark, Virginia and Henry Dolenski, Twyla and Eugene Monroe; brothers-in-law, Bob Roland and Carl Norris; brother and sister-in-law, George and Lucille Norris. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Ambrose Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday with Father Shine officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
