Emma E. Smith, 98, New Albany, passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at Providence Retirement Home in New Albany surrounded by her family following an extended illness. She was born on June 16, 1913, in Fishersburg, Indiana to Jack and Levina (Anderson) Wiseman and was a long-time Lapel resident. Emma retired in 1985 from the Lapel School as a custodian after 13 years of employment. She was a member of Ford Street United Methodist Church in Lapel; the Lapel American War Mothers; and the Lapel Lady Lions where she was their tail twister. She is survived by her son, Jim (wife, Teresa) Smith of New Albany; two grandchildren, Jamie (wife, Denne') Smith of Plainfield and Melanie (husband, Gayland) Baumgarten of Corydon; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Smith; a sister, Dorcus Carey-Crull of Lapel; a step-daughter, Wilma Jean Carins of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a step-daughter, Joan Troutman. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home in Lapel with Mr. Jim Smith and Rev. Thomas Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday, December 9, 2011, and from 11:00 am until the time of the service Saturday, December 9, 2011, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel. A memorial service will be held at the Providence Retirement Home in New Albany at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzeheimers Association, 50 East 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
