Elsie Hughes, 98, went to be with her Lord on January 28, 2016.
She was born Elsie Schrope in Anderson, Indiana July 30, 1917. In 1938, she graduated from nursing school and married her late husband, George Hughes. She moved with George to Marion where he managed the Hoosier Market.
Beloved mother of seven children (Charlie, Joan Pfrommer, John, Susie Long, Peggy Schmidt, David and Roger) all graduates of Marion High School, 19 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for 61 years playing the organ and piano, teaching Sunday School and visiting the sick and the elderly. After moving to Indianapolis she continued to find ways to serve as a member of Servants of Christ Lutheran Church. She loved God and the church dearly and was steadfast in her faith to the end.
In her mid 50’s she started playing tennis and last stepped on a court at age 90. She was dubbed the “First Lady of Tennis in Grant County” by Sports Hotline. She participated in as many tournaments as she could find and had a room full of trophies to show for it. She participated several times in the Senior Olympics. In 1993 she finished 3rd at nationals in the 75-79 age group for women’s tennis in Baton Rouge, LA. Indicative of her competitive spirit at the same event she tried the high jump for the first time and got 5th place.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 3 pm preceded by visitation from 1-3 pm at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church 7650 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis 46236. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Servants of Christ Lutheran Church.
