Duane “Red” Heiney, 92, of Anderson, Indiana, passed away March 5, 2018 in Indianapolis. He was born at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., and was the eldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his parents, A.L and Helen (Thompson) Heiney, his brothers, Lester and Ira, and his beloved wife of sixty years, Barbara (Jones) Heiney. He is survived by his children; Ed (Patty) Heiney, Dwana Heiney (partner Pete Foust), and Donald Heiney, as well as seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Red revered spending part of his youth residing with his family on a houseboat on the Chesapeake Bay. His father later moved the family to a farm in Fairborn, Ohio, where Red remained until he enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly spent two years as a tank driver, in the 10th Armored Division, serving under General Patton during World War II, part of which included the Battle of the Bulge. Red was the proprietor of Heiney’s Garage, which successfully served the community for over sixty years. He also enjoyed 25 years as a school bus driver, and continues to be fondly remembered by his many passengers. He was a lifetime member and former officer of the AMVETS, and also a member of the American Legion. He often recalled his appreciation for being a participant of the Honor Flight several years ago. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and provided his children with many opportunities to camp and travel the United States and Canada. Red leaves behind a multitude of friends and family who will forever remember his infamous stories and anecdotes. He had a larger than life persona, and will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Service & Crematory. Burial with military honors will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
