Dr. Albert 'Bert' W. Happel

Dr. Albert "Bert" W. Happel, 63, of Anderson, died Saturday, December 25, 2021. He was born September 06, 1958 in Indianapolis, the first of five children for Tony and Sally Happel.
He was a member of the last all male graduating class of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis (1976) and graduated from IU School of Optometry. In December of 1982 he purchased the practice of Dr. Stuart Sweeney and moved to Anderson. In 1990 he married Kristen Bean with whom he was blessed with two sons.
He had a lifelong passion for photography and was president of the Killbuck Photo Guild twice - once during the era of film and once in the digital age. His images were judged as Top 10 Indiana Photographer of the Year three times at the Indiana State Fair. He instituted and coordinated the annual Help Portrait Anderson event where each December photographers give portrait photos to those who would not otherwise be able to afford one.
He was also an early computer enthusiast. For fourteen years he operated the I.O. Board BBS facilitating electronic communication pre-internet. This included participation in the supply of email messages from home to the soldiers involved in Desert Storm. He valued personal relationships be it family, friends or coworkers. He strove to help others in ways direct such as his provision of eye care and indirect in electronic communications.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years; sons Anton (Bill) and Thomas; mother Sally Discher; stepfather David Discher; sisters Anne Wehrhan (Toby) and Beth Happel (Jim Hahn); brothers Dan (Eva) Happel and Jim (Tina) Happel; sister-in-law Kyle Hill; and eight nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind the family dogs Barkley, Tootsie, Sandy and Drew.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on TUesday, January 4, 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1115 Pearl Street, Anderson, Indiana 46016.
Visitation will take place from 4:00PM to 8:00pm on Monday, January 3, 2022 at Hersberger-Bozell Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main Street, Lapel, Indiana 46051.
