Doris Eilene Smith

Doris Eilene Smith, 81, Lapel, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016 , at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville following an extended illness.
She was born on February 5, 1935, in Oblong, Illinois, to Daniel Frank and Lana (Musgrave) Newbold.
Doris graduated in 1953 from Oblong High School.
She was an avid gardener and an excellent cook. She loved camping, fishing, crocheting, and her family, especially her grandchildren, Doris often said, if I had known they were this much fun, Id have had them first.
Doris and Smitty loved to sit out back in the swing or have a fire in the fire pit and watch the squirrels and birds. They did a lot of mushroom hunting near Turkey Run and also into Michigan. She and her husband picked up many hitch-hikers and military men and took them home, fixed them a meal, gave them a few dollars and would take them wherever they were going. Doris and Smitty loved their family and the Lord.
She is survived by three children, Jan (husband, Rick) Repp of Noblesville, Rebecca (husband, Brian) Clark of Anderson, and Paul Smith of Anderson; thirteen grandchildren, Sean, Jon, Emily, and Andy, Jonathon and Kayla (Steven), Shelby (Joe), Rachel, and Zach, and Brian, Erica, Megan, and Kaitlyn; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Diel of Brazil; two brothers, Jesse Newbold of Robinson, IL and Butch Newbold of Oblong, IL; her daughter-in-law, Pam Smith of Springfield, MO; two sisters-in-law Donna Smith of Summerfield, FL and Donna Newbold of Oblong, IL; and one brother-in-law Harry Walker of Keene, TX.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Garrard "Smitty" Smith; a son, Jack Smith; a great-grandson, Gabe Gilley; one brother, Don Newbold; and a sister, Mary Crapo.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 Main North Street, Lapel, Indiana with Rev. Stan Hackleman officiating. Burial will follow in Marion National Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, November 4, 2016, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home.
