Donald R. Smethers

Donald R. Smethers, 74, Lapel, passed away Sunday, January 11, 2004, at his winter home in Ellenton, Florida following an extended illness. He was born on October 9, 1929, in Madison County, Indiana to Ralph and M. Louise (Huntzinger) Smethers. He was a 1947 Lapel High School graduate and he owned and operated Don's Auto Body in Lapel for 35 years. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, and the Pendleton Lions Club where he had held many offices. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Katie (Hudson) Smethers of Lapel; three sons, David Smethers of Anderson, William (wife, Kim) Smethers of Fairmount, and Steven (wife, Pam) Smethers of Coopersville, MI; three sisters, Rachel (husband, Inos) Russell of Anderson, Eloise Hunter of Lapel, and Irma (husband, Jack) Hughes of Anderson; one brother, Keith Smethers of Westfield; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey White, Brian White, Erik White, Ryan Smethers, Carlie Smethers, Kolby Smethers, Kelly Smethers, Kaitlyn Smethers, and Donnie Smethers; five step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and several loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie White; his parents; and four brothers-in-law. Services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery, Lapel. Friends may call from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel.
