Donald R. Shafer

Donald R. "Don" Shafer, 78, Lapel, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, peacefully with his family at his bedside. He was born on February 23, 1934, in Boxholm, Iowa to Ray and Mildred (Tonkinson) Shafer. Three days after graduating from high school, he was sworn into the U. S. Navy. He was assigned to the destroyer USS Porterfield DD682 for four years serving during the Korean War. On November 11, 1953, he married his wife, Eunice Carlson. Donald enjoyed his job as a fertilizer chemical salesman and he retired in 1993 from Ag 1 Coop. He was know as an honest, hardworking man and he made many friends through his work. Other interests included camping, playing euchre with friends, traveling, and visiting family. He was a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War; a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Clarksville Masonic Lodge No. 118, and the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eunice (Carlson) Shafer; three daughters, Teresa (husband, Dirk) DeWolfe of Anaheim, CA, Jill (husband, Greg) Stephenson of Anderson, and Kim (husband, Rich) Wagner of Princeton, MA; eight grandchildren, Cama, Lindsay, Amber, Alexa, Jordan, Joshua, Jared, and Justus; and six great-grandchildren, Carlie, Tayler, Jaden, Elijah, Sydney, and Chloe. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frona Toyne and Elaine Chiles. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel with Pastor Doug Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Lapel American Legion Post 212. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 Main Street, Lapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 606, Lapel, Indiana 46051 or the American Heart Association. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Fall Creek Retirement Center and Seasons Hospice for their loving care of Don.
